Sermon Preparation is like .... brewing Wine?

Sermon Preparation is like brewing alcohol. Well, that sounds inappropriate. But they are similar in their processes.

Sermon preparation starts from prayer, asking God to give a scripture, his Word. The preacher walks through a vineyard, looking for grapes to harvest.

Once the scripture is picked, he studies it in detail; he pulls out lexicons, commentaries, and other literature to extract information from the text. The preacher squeezes the juice out of the grapes.

After studying as much as the time allows, the preacher walks away from the study, and wait for the Words to make some kind of impact on his heart; he prays, and waits. This is like sealing the grape juice into the bottle, and let it rest.

The preacher, while doing other stuffs, comes back to the text every once in a while, and reflects his feelings and thoughts to the text, and confirms them in the Words. This is like fermenting the wine.

One or two days before the Sunday, the preacher outlines his sermon, writes the script, and gives his message a title. This is like putting a label and a brand name on the wine bottle.

On Sunday, the preacher, with prayer, delivers the sermon. He follows the script, but is not bound by it. He sees the happy and sad faces from the pew, feels the joy and sadness of the congregation, and being led by the Spirit, he speaks.

This last part is like, opening the wine bottle, pulling out the cork, and .... enjoy the wine with the congregation, all the while Jesus is present.

After all, ... he made it for our nourishment and enjoyment. Thank you Jesus, for your words and their power.
